Headline Tracker

A headline is the most-read sentence of any article — and the one most often rewritten after publishing. Prism re-reads every outlet's feed three times a day; when an article it already holds comes back with a different headline, the before and after are recorded here.

Why headlines change

Some rewrites are corrections. Many are not: newsrooms test two or three headlines against each other and keep the one more people click, editors sharpen a hedge into a claim (or soften a claim into a hedge) as the story settles, and a headline written for the home page gets replaced by one written for search. None of that is sinister, but it is invisible unless someone keeps the earlier version.

What to look for: a verb that got stronger or weaker, a number that appeared or vanished, an attribution (“officials say”) that was dropped, a person named or un-named. Those are the same moves the five framings on every story page are built to show.

Prism only sees what an outlet’s public feed shows, so a rewrite that happens after an article leaves the feed goes unrecorded, and a few outlets append the section or author to the feed title in ways that can look like a change. Treat the list as a sample, not a ledger.
